Hey blindingsun... They want us back!
HAHAHAHAHA! Laughing
I think people are starting to realize how right I was when I was banned... Sam foakes wants heavier frames.... People saw how right I was there... Look at the response to that... all it took was 1 pro to step out and prove my point... There will be more to come soon enough... Im just waiting on the other pro's I've heard the same complaints from to step forward... so id expect more in the coming months to step out and demand better parts..

f**k that forum....
once an over-modded forum... always an over-modded forum....
If people want to hear diverse talking and diverse ideas its not gonna be on global.... thats for damn sure... martin already burnt that bridge... whatever forum people go to, martin and david rocan can't be mods... they were the ones who ruined global with over moderation, no need to repeat the same mistakes... I also don't think its in the best interest of the flatland community to go to a forum controlled by people who have direct interest in the sale of bmx parts... no company owners, salesmen mods...

wheres my apology rocan?

If the people want to hear from us, they can come where we are... Im not going back there to throw out ideas.... maybe to browse around for a good laugh.... but thats it...
Im down for this forum or pedal...

I just had a look at the thread in mention.

I have to be honest, I nearly always got along with the thread starter
"SnICKer" and subsequent people posting on that thread.

My biggest issue with GF is the mod/admin.
I wont cut off my nose to spite my face, and say I wont ever go back.
However I will say, that after all the problems I had with Martin and
the current status of the moderation team, I dont wish to be an active
part of such a forum.

If the truth be known, I never liked GF.
But after Nick went AWOL with Pedal, there wasnt much option but to
follow the flock and conform to what was constantly enforced.

I still dont want to go back to pedal, especially after what happened.
I wouldn't mid going over to another site if it was setup, and by no means
am I looking to boost this forum on some ego whim.
But I will keep this forum open as long as it needs, as even if the forum
isnt the largest, its nice to see the content on here is somewhat interesting
even if the content is not the most current at all times.

The diverse voices are what made this place enjoyable. Every post has some truth. Even between the lies or whatever.

Funny how the ones that called for ejections, ejected themselves shortly after.

Mods, i propose a second chance invitation to the outcasts.

Give this place its life back. Yes its a flatland forum, but its also a crossroad for ideas. Ive touched lives with people all over this world through GF."

What happened with nick is understandable...
I fully respect what nick did with pedal.. The forum software thats out there on the market has limits... and security issues to boot... a bug that works on 1 site works on every other site with the same forum software...
Forum software thats custom made, has to have exploits and such researched directly for that software.... and nicks software isn't too widespread on the net right now... so the likely hood of there being exploits readily available is very slim...

I respect the shit out of that... I found some bugs in such over on global and to be honest... I don't think any of them have been fixed... I think martin just ignored all of the security complaints I sent over to him..

I don't think thats cool at all... and my ids has cought some shenanigans Im still puzzled as to who was behind them... what was up with that google cookies thing sending my password to google? and what was up with that dns poisoning? I think I cought someone with their hand in the cookie jar...
Its to the point where its almost not even worth it to use standardized forum software because of the security implications involved...
I've never tried to find any exploits on this site... but im sure there are some that work... just because its widely used software...

pedal is 95% fully functional again...
Theres just a few small lil querks that need worked out, but its nothing thats going to effect the ability to use the site...

While I fully understand that pedal used to be a great place,
I really believe that from behind the scenes Nick was NOT the
reason that the place was so great.

To be frank, while we all appreciated the environment that Nick had
set up. By no means was it his work which made pedal what it was.

It could have been any generic site, with phpbb installed by any John doe.

The simple fact is that the forum only started to blossom when Nick
wasnt there
. And that in itself was a blessing in disguise as it
allowed the users and the mods to help develop a truly great forum.

Unfortunately, while Nicks interest may have been seen as positive
towards the site. When in reality they had the reverse effect as users
wanted stability and every small change didnt really help development.

And while his last major rebuild was meant to benefit the community,
again it had the reverse effect and actually caused a mass exodus.
And it wasnt like they just all left over the space of 2 or 3 weeks.

We all left after waiting and waiting and waiting .....
I think it took a good 3 months before most users left pedal.
And they only left because of all the broken promises of it will be fixed soon.

The simple fact is its like 2 or so years since pedal died, and it still looks
like crap and still doesnt work as it should.

Pedals value is only whats in its brand name, and this was created by the
users and mods (not nick). And even if nick gets the site back online and
working to a normal manner we are all still in jeopardy that Nick will go
on another wrong direction at the costs of its users (again).

If Nick wanted pedal back, he should have installed a generic forum
software, and then left it to grow by itself.

I think nick learned a lot from those mistakes he made back then... You don't use/test prototypes in a live network environment... you test then deploy...
Thats where he went wrong... He deployed forum software that wasn't tested to the fullest, and wanted the users to find and report the bugs... but the bugs in themselves kept a lot of people from even reporting them... So the progressive changes in the past month being made have been tested before being deployed...

Since I got banned, I've been helping test some of the stuff with the new version of the site, and so far the changes have only been good..

Im really not too fond of mainstream forum software because of the "helpless" factor... When a security bug comes out, a lot of times you need to pay for the update to fix it, or be stuck with crappy insecure software... and thats only if you have the option of buying the update to fix the bug.. some times it can take months to fix or even longer depending on how much code needs changed... If a forum exploit went on unfixed for that long, it could have worse results than nick swapping the forum software around... With global, the standardized forum software had a lot of bugs... some of which allowed some seriously dangerous things to happen.. that bug I found with the images, could have allowed someone to compromise the entire forum populations information... or worse yet, lock everyone out of their accounts, including the mods... and who knows what kinda shady stuff was goin on with the google cookies...
How long do you think a forum would last if everyone got locked out of their accounts because of an exploit?

Not only that, but its become blatantly obvious that someone who runs a forum needs to be competent enough to keep it a secure environment for the users... Remember when the whole WOF site was hacked by some turkish nut jobs? that was because of standardized web software... The people running global are far from competent enough for that sort of thing... Right now, I honestly feel nick is the only one with the experience and knowledge to run a forum right...
I mean seriously... do you know anyone else who's well versed in web hosting and web security?
I don't...
I wouldn't run a forum cause there's too many people that are on the "disagree with whatever I say" bandwagon for me to have a forum... and I don't have the programming skills to keep things secure...

Nick is the only one I feel is the right man for the job...
He has the skills and the drive... why not give him another chance?

Heres an exploit for this sites forum software that will steal passwords...
http://www.securiteam.com/exploits/6R00K0K96Q.html

Heres one that would allow you to log in as whoever you want with no password...
http://www.securiteam.com/exploits/5KP0C0UF5M.html

Those 2 bugs right there alone could take down the forum....

Theres tons more out there... some of which can allow a user to make themselves an admin...

If you google phpbb exploits, you see hundreds of results... just the same... google smf exploits and you'll get tons of results...
Theres pages and pages of exploits for all the forum software thats out there...

Brian,
lets examine pedal and global as they cover, close to a 6-8 year online presence.
Then lets look at the amount of members that have gone through the site over
this period of time.

I am guessing at least 10,000 individuals have been through either of them.
Over this time, and the software thats been available do you think the forum
has opened any real exploit that is substantially different to any other website?

Yes there will always be glitches in the system, but I would rather trust a
community of developers who contribute to make a forum rather than just 1
person. Especially based on the chain of events.

Even linux, while it was designed by 1 person hasnt reached its current
size and security by the means of 1 person.

While I want to stay positive,
I cant say that pedal, no matter how good the software might become is the
right place for a new community. Pedals been and gone.

It may bring fond memories reminiscing, but those times are over.
And if a new place was to be adopted, I cant say pedal should be it.

HAHAHAHA, oh man... im sure all of global's users are just itching to get on there...

Byke, the thing is... Some of these exploits are meant to be used in a stealth manner... A large part of exploiting something revolves around who/what your exploiting not finding out about it, or how they got your data...
Some of the things my ids has caught while on global... particularly the google cookies thing and the image pw dump exploit... would be used for escalation...

which would mean... getting the pw's of the user base... then trying to access those peoples email accounts with the same pw to fish for valuable data... and from those email accounts would lead a plethora of other data that could be escalated...

a lot of people unfortunately have a universal pw... so if you got their forum pw... you would have their pw for everything... So just because they got your pw on a forum... doesn't mean that exploit was meant to do damage to there... Look at myspace for example... Theres so many trojans and viruses floating around that site, but very rarely do they actually alter the users myspace account anymore... They are more or less for fishing information...

That dns poisoning issue I made a big fuss about right before being banned.... That could be used in some seriously evil ways... if someone controls your routers dns cache... they control almost every aspect of your internet use... they could have an invisible proxy between you and every site you use, and unless you were properly trained, all you would notice is an extra hop in your traceroute, and unless you knew how to spot an iregularity in a trace route(hopping from a provider network, to a non-provider network, and back to a provider network), it would just look like normal output to most... this type of attack would allow the capture of passwords, credit card numbers, etc... the possibilities are almost endless...

So the horrid reality of it is... If there was exploits running, the likely hood of anyone even noticing is slim to none... The only reason I cought those bugs was because Im workin towards my ccsp, and play around with an ids system daily... I don't know anyone else in the bmx industry who runs an ids system on their home network... Do you?

Some of those bugs I found for phpbb would allow a trojan horse to be dropped to the end users computer... how many people could actually trace down where a trojan came from on their computer? they wouldn't know they had it, until it became a lil more mainstream and their av software catches it... which could be months after it was actually installed, foiling for the most part, any chance of finding out where it actually came from... and the likely hood of the forum staff even being able to detect it is slim to none cause their not qualified to even know where to start...

Historically, proprietary systems have been exponentially more secure than standardized systems... One would need the source code to R&D some exploits... and the less people that have that source code... the less probability of an exploit... This is the same reason macs have dodged the virus issues that windows has... theres less people using mac, and less people developing software for mac... so the code is less circulated than microsofts... But, as we've seen this year, that is slowly coming to an end... That guy at blackhat broke into a mac with root level access in less than 60 seconds using some low-level code on a usb flash drive...

I suppose I am a little jaded in that sense.

Programming :
I still feel a group or community of coders will have a better chance of
of working out errors, than 1 single person.

And on the other side, the security breaches you mention dont really
bother me as I find that current security is enough in relation to any
other standard online medium.

Security reality :
My view is that if any computer has such sensitive content, I would have 2
separate computers .... 1 for work (no internet or network) and 1 surf box
for online leasure.

Common sense and value :
What I am saying is even if the online security is better (or claimed as) on
pedal, I cant rationally see that as an advantage based on the coders past
tense and mistakes. Especially as its only a flat forum.

Pedal (simple truths)

Nick didnt create the community, he simply supplied the space.
That was it, nothing else.... and charged for it.

In fact all of Nicks actions had generally a negative effect to the community
and it was left to the loyal users to try and clean up and continue on.

And the biggest damnation towards nick and his programming skills has been
the way pedal has been broken and unfinished for a good 2 years and the mass
of users he lost through his own inflated self ego.

Even if Nick is a qualified programmer all these years on,
he doesnt have an understanding of what a community needs.
If a community needed such a web system, then all of this software needed is
already publicly available and wont take x amount of years of beta testing.

Simple truth is, Nicks actions lost a community that was united under his umbrella.
And while I wouldn't rule out been herded back to pedal if push comes to shove.
It wouldn't be any better or worse than what we have seen on GF, just different variables.

Conclusion :
I wouldn't hold it against anyone who gets desperate and wants to go back on a nostalgic
cruise over to Pedal. But I wouldn't say it was the lesser of 2 evils. I would say that
based on past history and actions it was worse than what we have now, but glossed
over with nostalgia.

I truly miss pedal.
But true pedal, never had Nick involved.

Yes very true, a group of programmers is always going to be able to get more work done than 1...

The one thing I don't think a lot of people realize about information security is the one thing that always comes to bite them in the ass... escalation.. Even if you had stuff on separate computers, all it would take is a compromise on 1 to get the info on the other... One piece of information always leads to another... and that info leads to more info... Information compromises spread and grow in an exponential manner...
Look at how blindinsun got Craig "Mutt" Walters (THE 36TH LORD WALTERS OF ABERDEEN - LOL)....

True it may only be a flat forum.... But theres still money involved... A large chunk of the forum is purchase influence... People often buy parts while browsing the forums... This is where the real security issues im concerned with come in... You've got a userbase, that is often purchasing items online based on the forum happenings... any non-flatlander could easily observe this with a few clicks... Some may even be purchasing directly through the click of banners... The amount of ways these standardized forum apps could be used as a fishing hole to intercept credit card data is huge... and thats nothing to scoff at... a credit card number leak, can lead to a lot of financial turmoil... Guy I went to college with had to have his credit frozen for 5 years cause of some id theft bullshit...

as for nicks lack of work on the site.... really... if everyone just up and dipped, would you be real motivated to work on it? But if you've noticed that since I hopped over there and got some people posting again, nicks been in gear to get things finished..

as for being better or worse... Anything is better than a forum that tries to cover ass for companies who ripped off the riding community... generic forum software or not... literally anything is better than that... This site included...
The biased moderation, the cover ups, fearmongering.... It was never any where near that bad on any bmx forum I can think of...
People left backlash before things got that bad....

Even if people didn't go to pedal, I would still be in support for the use of nicks proprietary software...

The thing is, for a new forum to work... it needs to be run by someone the rest of the community doesn't already have a biased hatred for....
I think there's too much bias towards the 3 of us for any one of us to run it...

Thing is... I don't know anyone in flatland I feel competent enough to do it...

byke, pardon my ignorance... but wtf is an agony aunty section?

Chris : Kool.

Brian, an agony aunt is :
Quote:
An advice column is a column at a magazine or newspaper written by an advice columnist (colloquially known as an agony aunt, or agony uncle if the columnist is a male). The image presented was originally of an older woman providing comforting advice and maternal wisdom, hence the name "aunt".

Blow everything out of proportion?
excuse me? apparently some people don't think im blowing things out of proportion...
A decent number of pro riders have agree'd with what I've said about the quality of bike parts... and how things need to change... a lot of them just can't say anything because of sponsorships...
Sam foakes stepped out of the trend of building lighter... and more will follow... you still going to disagree when more come out and demand better parts, or are you going to stick with the obsolete band wagon trend of demanding light and flimsy cause I disagree?
maybe you'll be that unlucky one that gets impaled by a shitty bike frame...

Like I would even go back to global....
globals a lost cause.... overmoderation killed that forum... Look at the posts now that I've been banned... Look how lame and boring it got.... people that saw me get banned for some legitimate gripes, are now afraid to post anything... the mods have fearmongered the forum to death... just look at it now.... the post per day count is down.. the number of views per day is down... activity on the site in general is down...
People come here to see what I have to say... and your proof!

Dude, there are more people on there reaking havoc on there then ever before, no one likes you, thats why you got banned. Pros agreed with you? Probably so you would shut the f**k up because they don't give two shits about your opinion, because it's meaningless...You know how random people will come by while you're riding, and ask you questions, or compliment you, and you brush them off, because you're busy, you don't want to discuss with them, you just nod your head. Or, you just agree, and repeat what they say back to them, that's probably what people are doing with you.

Every rider I know (including plenty from the good old United States of America) says you're an idiot and have no clue what you're talking about. Stop claiming you won because Sam Foakes is coming out with a heavier frame. No one ever said that the market wasn't going to go that way, we just want you to shut the f**k up about you slandering companies that don't deserve it (e.g. Flatlandfuel).

The flatland market has done this before, its all just repeating itself, first shit was heavy, then stuff got light, then shit got heavy again, now its light again, then its gonna go heavy again...Get over yourself for predicting something that's already happened.

I come here to troll you because you're hilarious, haha. And your replies make my life hilarious. Since I don't post on Global much anymore...Going to the Atlanta Jam? God I hope so...Haha.
