Howdy everyone,

Captain Caveman,

I would love to see the pic’s of the new design. The pic links are dead. Perhaps you could use Photobucket; they seem to stay active longer.

I am interested in this ""mod" if you will and would really like to see more.

Has the Ultimate One ever been finished? Has it ever been fired up?
Really, curious as it is about the size I am considering building.
Thanks in advance,
My .02 worth is that the Clones when you have the baffles right the flow right etc the heat is fairly evened out.I dont think that there would be signifigant gains by doing the reverse flow.I thought a lot about trying something like that as I have some friend who use Backwoods and they love em.I cooked on a pair at the Royal Invitational and I realy wished I had taken the time to cook on them before competing with them.Captain Caveman had offered the use of his clones for this contest and I wish I had taken him up on it.I dont know if the results would have been better but at least I would have peace of mind that the cookers were familar.

                                      Coz,

Yea, The Platnium 5 is an awsome machine!

The more I read the more interseted I have become in the Stumps Clone.

I started out really wanting to do a Backwoods clone. From what I am understanding the water pan is not required as the Stumps low volume generates a high mositure burn and that does not dry the meat out. It is a fasinating concept. I have a couple of projects to finish this winter, but I hope find the time to build a vertical smoker.

Would your gravity feed fire box design work with the reverse Backwoods
smoke flow? Taking the smoke to the top of the cooking chamber then back down through and out the bottom rear of the chamber?

I am thinking that the Stumps design probably does not need this?

What is your opionion?
Just how big are the grates? What temps did you get to on your test run? How did the biscuits turn out? What was the fuel consumption like?

I should have left the biscuit pics out. They tasted like cr@p anyway.
I had trouble with temp the first test run (the biscuit test), but found my problem. I had cut the hole and attached the heat transfer tube too low on the 6x6 chute(too small of a fire). I took care of the problem by adding 3" of 6x6 tube on the inside of the ash box. (oops)

I used it in my first comp of the year on 4/4/08 and it did great. At that comp we ran temps about 300*F. This weekend we did a batch of ribs (21 racks of baby backs) and ran it at 235*F. Fuel consumption is about 12 hours out of a chute of briquetts (about 18#). This is low because I had the doors open alot.

I have 3 racks measuring 39" wide x 24" deep.

I am building the twin for this one, but the firebox will be on the other side, so I can put them on the front of my mobile kitchen butted up to each other.

These are built out of 1" sq tube, with 2" thermal insulating wool insulation (I was a little worried about compressing the insulation but there have been no problems). while the smoker is running you can't feel any heat on the exterior, except arround the firebox (and directly above the firebox).

I added 2 sand pans on top of the diffuser plate, and it REALLY helps with recovery time.
