I have a BBQ. I love it. The more I read, smoking the food seems fantastic. Am thinking about getting a smoker. Do not want to soend too much at first, as need to make sure that I really like it. I am going to Wpg today and am going to check out the Big Green Egg. Apparently it is at Prairie Fireplaces. Will see how it goes.

The Ugly Drum Smokers also look cool. Not very expensive to make either apparently. Just wish I had the tools, shop and talent to do this. LOL

The other cooker to look for is the WSM--Weber Smoky Mountain. They are around $300 and probably the best cooker for $300 anywhere. They are ready to go right out of the box, as soon as you bolt the legs on, and produce a great product. Many competition teams use WSM's and only WSM's and they win.

Thanks. Stopped by Prairie Fireplace today. The Small Egg is 717$ and the large is 1099.00. Wow, expensive. The WSM is looking like a good option. Where would I find one of those in the Winnipeg area?

Hey Worf, I have two WSM's. One I ordered from Home Depot in St. James, and the second I ordered from Amazon.com and picked up in Neche North Dakota. It was free shipping. I also built my own Ugly Drum Smoker and it only cost me about $100.00.

My first UDS cost about 30.00 to build with a free drum. The second was even less. You don't need any special tools and welding is not a requirement. All mine are bolted or wired together.

Can you do the same things with the UDS as you can with the WSM?

I cook exactly the same on either the WSM or the drum. I like the drum for chicken a little better, seems to get a little hotter. Pork ribs are the same on both.

Yes there is in the USA. Google BDS or Big Drum Smokers. They are not cheap and I would imagine because of their size, that the shipping will be expensive as well. Cheaper to build your own and you can do it without any welding. All you will need is a drill and a couple of wrenches.

Thanks for this. I have read it over, and it actually looks doable. I may try to make one in the near future.

Both the WSM and the drum smoker will hold temperature steady for hours and hours. If I was just starting out I'd go with the drum... Cheap and easy.
different flavour from the drum too - you get some extra flavour from the fat & drippings landing right on the fire.
