Been making my own venison sausage since the mid 80's. When I first started I would bring my finished product in to a meat locker to have it smoked for me. Then in the mid 90's my wife suggested that we start trying to smoke our own, which is what I should have been doing all those years.

Shortly after my wife and I started smoking sausage we also started smoking 6 to 8 turkeys at a time, many were for family and friends. Then about 5 years ago we decided to start trying ribs, brisket, pork butts etc.

Grills and smokers we have are a Yoder YS640, Weber Smokey Joe, 2 Weber 22.5" kettles, Holland Companion, Holland Legacy, a modified CharGriller Smoking Pro offset, an Orion cooker/smoker/steamer, 30" & a 40" electric Masterbuilt's and a stainless steel industrial refrigerator that we converted to a smoker that is propane fueled with thermostat and electronic pilot. I am also in the middle of a UDS build for the last 6 months, I really need to get after finishing it.....

Recently my wife and I are considering trying out a competition or two but are not finding anything local to North Dakota... Posting on another website a Prairie member jerry516planes suggested I look at this site.

Besides smoking, grilling and eating my other hobbies are hunting with my Golden Retriever "Grissom", fishing, rifle and shotgun reloading; and every now and then I like having a few cold ones!

Thanks for letting my join you folks!

Welcome to the forum MossyMO. Looks like you have quite the bbq collection there. I have a good friend that lives just south of you at Minot that comes up to the Manitoba BBQ Championship each year. Perhaps you could also consider coming up this year. It is a brand new venue on the west side of the city and promises to be the biggest competition yet in Manitoba. We have $10,000 in prize money and it is KCBS sanctioned. Check out the web site - www.mobc.ca If you have any questions you can ask them here or under the competition heading or PM me.

Hey Mossy, welcome to the forum! Glad to see another smoker near Minot, now there are 2 that I know of Wink As Jim mentioned, no competitions in North Dakota, at least real sanctioned ones. There was a big event in Dickinson in 2008 but it never returned for a second year.

A couple other events come to mind...
Huron, SD June 2
Stevensville, MT Aug 4... that one is probably pretty far though
Worland, WY August... 18 I think.

There are proably a half dozen events in MN, and most of those are probably closer than the ones I mentioned above Rolling Eyes

So you're going to have to make a road trip of it...

Hey MossyMO, be sure to check out the SD BBQ Championships in Huron, SD as Rob mentioned above. It'll be good practice for the event in Winnipeg!!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Is the competitor from Minot a member here?

If a person wanted to compete, typically how much time in advance do have have for signing up and paying fee's? I am assuming you can not sign up 2 weeks before the competition?

Is there something I need to do to be signed or registered with KCBS?

Welcome to the forum. No, you do not have to be a KCBS member in order to compete at a KCBS event. In order to be considered for Team of the Year, I think that does require being a KCBS member though.

As far as how much advance time do you have to sign up for a competition? That probably depends on if the event has filled their limit for teams. If there are still spots available, I would think you could get signed up as just a couple of days before the event.

You can just go to the KCBS site and search the "events" for KCBS competitions in your area (or where ever you are headed for a vacation). http://www.kcbs.us/events.php

As Steve said, some comps will take entries right up to the day of the event, but some are only able to take so many teams and if it is a popular comp it may fill up fast. Then you would need to register early. Also registering early helps the organizers get everything they need to run the event smoothly. The team from Minot are not on the forum as they don't have or want a computer. Their team name is Quiet Riot (Doug & Helen).
