I see everybody has used a round pipe for the chimney. Is there a reason for that? I have a chunk of 4" x 6" square tube,1/4 wall, that I was thinking of using. It would weld on much better but is there some reason no one has used this? Also, where did you guys get your door gasket? For the cookbox door that normally wont get over 200-275 F. would high temp RTV work? Thanks in advance, work still in progress. John. |

I used 4" square. No troubles. I think that too large a chimney could create a problem. Anyone have definative info either way???
Door gasket is from a fireplace store that sells parts for airtight woodstoves. Also available at some home hardware stores. Very common and easy to find in Canada

Should be no problem with the 4 x 6 rectangular chimney. I have a 5" dia round chimney and no problem. I think it is more important to have a large enough chimney to prevent a build up of stale smoke in the cooking chamber. My Oyler commercial pit has a 18" diameter chimney and I never have any stale smell coming from it. You could always put a sliding lid on the top, to keep out weather and also could be used as a damper if needed. For the door gaskets I used high temp silicone sealer. It is red in color and works better than the stuff you get with the stove door gasket sets.

Thanks for the feedback guys, this site is incredable source of information. Jim, I was refering to using just RTV and no gasket material. I have done it a few time at the Hydro plant, apply a thick bead of RTV on one side and plastic food wrap on the other side. Close door with a coin or washer as a spacer and let cure. Remove coin and plastic and when you close the door you will compress the RTV. This was never done in high temp situations. What do you think? John. |

Yelonutz, I used to make gaskets in the same manner. Give it a try. I will do the same here and compare results. |

As long as it is the high temperature silicone, I don't know why it wouldn't work. Might be a little iffy on the firebox door, but I see no reason it wouldn't be fine on the cooking chamber door. What have you got to lose? $5? |

Jim, I think the fire box door would be pushing it. I will try it with the red RTV on my Weber Smokey Mountain since the stumper clone is not to that point yet. When you do a cure burn, how hot does the cooking chamber get? That is my only concern for this type of gasket because the cooking temp will not normally go above 225-250 f. Thanks, John. |
