Okay okay so i'm going to soundwave [music fest] in february. I went last year and my photos were shocking !!! Very over exposed and i didn't capture them quick enough so band members are often out of frame.

I have upgraded my camera since then, I now have a Panasonic Lumix TZ7/ZS3 which is as far as I know one of the best prosumer point and shoots, I didn't want an SLR because they are to bulky.

Now I'm wondering what settings I should use to get the best out of this camera. During the day it is most likely going to be very bright or cloudy. I need to be prepared for these conditions.

Should I use the sports/action mode on the camera or should I go full out manual and dictate my own settings. What are optimal ISO's to minimise noise but get nice sharp pictures and what mode of autofocus should I use the camera has a few modes including AF Tracking, 11 Area, 1-Area High Speed, 1-Area, Spot, Face Detect.

Or is the auto function good enough ?

Now later on it will be dark probably only with the lighting effects on the stage etc. Again I'm wondering the optimal ISO's and AF modes etc...Should I be using sports/action mode ?

Thanks lol I'm a bit of a n00b at this

I just thought to bring it up because I know the frustration of not knowing what kind of settings you should use xD
I remember I had a brand new camera and I took it to a ML gig and I had the wrong settings, pictures were blurry and not sharp. So during the gig I tried to set the good settings. So it's good to know beforehand to prevent frustration xD

If you're going to go for the manual option, I'd keep the ISO at 400. Anything higher and you'll get noisy, over exposed photos (if during the day/in the sun). If it's super bright, you may even be able to knock it down to 200 or 100, but I'm not too sure how well those speeds would handle movement. I'd probably stick to 400 anyway.
Question...Do you have a shutter and aperture priority settings? I assume you do, if you have the ability to go fully manual? I'd probably go for shutter priority and keep the shutter at 1/160 and higher. Or if you go for AV, during the day you should be able to get away with any aperture, it's just up to you how large you want the depth of field to be.

But honestly, in this case, auto/sport mode would be your best option. From my experience, digital cameras manual settings are so fidgety and difficult to use, and by the time the camera actually TAKES the photo, everything's all moved and it just comes out shit Laughing Plus if you're all squished in a crowd, it takes so long etc. Maybe experiment a little first? I just use auto on my point and shoot, and use manual/AV/TV on my SLR at gigs...
