Halogen downlights can only be replaced by MR16 or GU10 or whatever identical base LED lights. Do note if the halogens are 12V and line 240V line voltage. (ie have electronic power supply or huge electromagnetic transformer) |

One day pay a visit to Sim Lim Tower 2nd storey and 3rd storey. 2nd storey has a lighting store that deals everything on LEDs. They have a good selection of MR16/GU10 LED modules - not unlike those 35 or 50W halogen spotlights with dichroic glass reflectors. GU10 operates on 240v line level, ie built in power supply. For this...just go to any light shop, choose your fav track light or individual halogen lighting fixture, select the fixture only (no power supply needed), wa lah...ok liao.
If you are afraid that it does not fit coz you are gonna buy a boatload of it, just buy 1 pc and bring over to lightshop to test.
Need a bit of legwork, but well worth it.
If not stock for warm white or whatever, they can order.
3W 5W 7W 10W 20W all wattages also got. The bigger ones would need PAR fixtures. eg PAR38
3rd storey also got some stuff....more for automotive but a decent selection of LED spots. You would need to see if the LED spot fits your decor - some do not like that 3 diode emitter look, then look for something that is 3W emitter but with glass lense in front to focus to light to achieve the required beamwidth, those look way cool...but might cost a bit more.
Or just go all the way and whack metal halide spotlights. Slightly better Colour Rendering Index, ie its a higher quality light. Its actually much cheaper for the same lumens of light, and its as energy saving as LED/Compact fluorescent. There are some MH bulbs with integrated reflector that puts out a very narrow spot - believe Fia wanted this effect. But I do not know where to get the really advanced MH stuff with advanced-looks reflectors, like what Mont Blanc, Vertu, Bell & Ross are using. Absolutely superb stuff.
Apparently I got my MH cheap, $139. I recommended other forummers and they only managed to get for $170 per unit.
Spotlights and CFL/PLC downlights create very different moods. Select properly, but if you are after a high-tech, modern contemporary, spotlights are a must (check out Fia's blog and gaz's blog). PLC is very diffused. Or if your budget allows, use both, ask your ID to design properly. No horse run.... |

Hi 2100,
I did not opt for hanging lights for my dining table as place is very windy but decided to install four concealed halogen downlights over my dining table. Downside is of course the heat.
I'm thinking of getting LED downlights and perhaps MH lights. Does MH gives out a lot of heat like halogen? Do you have any pics of MH light?
I was told by one Balestier Road light retailer shop that T5 lights only come in warm white or daylight but not cool white which I wanted. Do you think so? |

You can take a walk this weekend through Mandarin Gallery, lots of shops using metal halide spots. No its not very hot, its efficiency is somewhat like good PLC, 70-80 lumens per watt. Those are big, there is a pretty new mini bulb by Philips called CDM-Tm, 20W, so the bulb holder is not very big. But need to hunt down the fixtures as its not easy to find.
