Again, I really enjoy coming to this site.

I have ordered a drum. I am getting it on Monday. It was used once. It contained plated blank coins which were in a bag. Should be ideal.

I told Barry that I wanted to try to smoke something. He laughed and said that once you start, you get hooked and don't/can't start. I am not sure what I am beginning here.

Maybe I should be afraid?

I am really looking forward to giving it a try. Can't wait.

Tony, just keep an eye on Barry. He's liable to flip that barrel on it's side, add a firebox on the end and make an offset stick burner out of it. But I'm sure it would still be a great smoker.

Take Barry up on his offer. You just need a steel drum that has not contained anything toxic or petroleum.

I have sent out a few e-mails in search of a 45 gallon drum that is food grade. An waiting for replies.

Both the WSM and the drum smoker will hold temperature steady for hours and hours. If I was just starting out I'd go with the drum... Cheap and easy.
different flavour from the drum too - you get some extra flavour from the fat & drippings landing right on the fire.

Yes there is in the USA. Google BDS or Big Drum Smokers. They are not cheap and I would imagine because of their size, that the shipping will be expensive as well. Cheaper to build your own and you can do it without any welding. All you will need is a drill and a couple of wrenches.

I cook exactly the same on either the WSM or the drum. I like the drum for chicken a little better, seems to get a little hotter. Pork ribs are the same on both.

My first UDS cost about 30.00 to build with a free drum.The second was even less. You don't need any special tools and welding is not a requirement. All mine are bolted or wired together.

Hey Worf, I have two WSM's. One I ordered from Home Depot in St. James, and the second I ordered from Amazon.com and picked up in Neche North Dakota. It was free shipping. I also built my own Ugly Drum Smoker and it only cost me about $100.00.

+ Home Depot has them thats where I got mine took 2 weeks to get it in.
