I showed my dad this website and he was very impressed (me too) with all of the builders, the site and this new fangled thing called the internet. He went home... and the next day Dad decided he needed a fire box, so he could try his hand at smoking meat. He called me after he had ripped out one side of the bbq! Shocked so I guess we are doing some kind of offset thing. Did I tell you guys we are BBQ Rookies? Laughing

Image

So we need some help. The inside of the bbq measures 21”x 49” and is 17” deep. He is planning on using a cut in half drum pieced together for a lid and making a rotisserie. When he builds the fire box, we need to know how big should the hole be? He has some 4”x4” square steel and some 3”x3”. He wants to run it from the firebox to the center of the bbq… What do you guys think we should do? We kind of thought the smoke coming from the middle would be better than one side, please correct me if I’m wrong. We also could use a few ideas for the firebox and an easy way to build a door… Yep! We are building a rocket now! Thanks again for any help you guys give us.

I bought Pops a new 40" rotisserie for $25.00 at lowes, its not long enough to span the whole bbq, but I think we can make it work. If it the rain don't stop, Dad is going to explode. Shocked He really wants to get back to work on this thing.

Dad and "The Rocket". Shocked Cool Laughing

Dad is going to cut the pipe and start on the firebox soon. We have got to find a way to make the lid fit tight and fix a few things. He has 2 old brass handles, he found one and is looking for the other... if he finds the other one Laughing and shines them up they should look cool.

I also finnished welding the briquet (or charcoal) tray.

I've got to cleanup and reweld the lid frame, Dad's little welder is not doing the job... so I took a few things home to help him out a bit. Very Happy

Moving right along. Do you have a projected completion date yet? First cook?

Jim,
No projected completion date yet, we are working small design issues and ordering stuff like stove rope, plus the bbq has to dry, the mud is still green.
Should I raise the reverse flow pipe on the opposite side of the fire box? I was thinking one or two inches?, it's about 55 inches long.

We are both giving this all of our spare time, we want to be testing the cooker in early May Wink The problem is I do not have as much time as my Dad. The fire box is next on the list Cool more pic's this weekend.

Thanks! for all your help Jim,

Probably wouldn't hurt to raise the pipe a couple of inches.

Dads firebox door is almost done. Shocked I just need to figure out how to make a good handle... I know, I could make a bad handle... never made a handle for a firebox... Laughing anyway we had to grind off 90% of the welds on the grill frame (due to a weak HF welder Mad ),reweld it and paint it. The pic is dark, it was late in the day.
