Jason you could build yourself a UDS cheep for a start lots of thoes around or by a WSM to get started boath do a fair job of BBQ just not as good as a good offset. |

Hey Jason,
I have a Big Drum Smoker, and a couple of Weber Smokey Mountains if you want to see something before you buy. I am just up the road in St. Andrews if you want to stop by sometime. |

Hi Barry. Is it difficult to control the temps in a UDS? I built something similar a few years back for a fishing lodge I worked at- a bit of a cheaper model- I used a aluminum garbage can, meat hooks, a rack etc...and of course had a heck of a time trying to keep it consistant. Had fun tho! |

Welcome to the forum! The WSM or drum smoker are good options, great for starting out. If you have a little more money to spare you could also look at pellet grills such as Traeger. Are you just looking for something to use at home?
(PS... We are all assuming you're looking for a smoker or something to cook "real" low 'n slow BBQ in... if you're in the market for a gasser we're not experts )
It's very easy to hold stable temperatures in a drum smoker. Here's a good guide:

The traeger is okay but expensive for a new comer. The Green Mountian Grills have way more options and will actually hit higher temps so that you can actually grill with them. Also alot less money than the traegers. Brand new with the digital control and cover is only around $750 compareable model with the traeger will be around $1100. The UDS is not that bad for controlling the temp and it is a great start which will be very little capital output to get going. A lot of options out there to choose from, first thing you need to decide is the money you want to spend, from their you will then be able to decide which option best suits you. |

Jason,
I am between Selkirk and Lockport. About 1.5 kms from Selkirk, just past the 9 & 9A junction. I will be around most of the weekend if that works. Friday evening is okay also. Send me a private message if you want directions. |
