hey guys just joined the site. Love what I'm seeing so far. I would like to start a build of my own. I think I just want to build a vertical cabinet with 1"frame with insulation and an inner wall as well. The charcoal basket would be under the grates. I figured possibly a 1/4 plate above the basket with a water pan(either filled with water or sand not sure yet) for heat deflection. I just want something small enough to do possibly a couple of briskets or butts like in the area of 24" x 24" with 2 to 3 shelves. I'm wondering how much room I would need between the bottom grate and the top of the water pan/plate I would need so I could determine the height of the smoker?

Sounds like you are describing the original Stumps smoker before the gravity fed system. His original design had a drawer under the cooking racks where the charcoal was put -- using a minion method to get long burning times.
Jim might have some pics of one someplace. I don't think I ever saw the insides myself. I'll have to look around and see if I can locate any pics.
